The North Shore
Most of the places listed below are along the way to the Road to Hana, but since the RTH can take up an entire day, you might want to visit this area on its own. You can also combine it with seeing some sights Upcountry since they are only about 15 to 20 minutes apart. Click the underlined links for more information. Places are listed as you will approach them coming from Kihei.
Baby Beach Sprecklesville: This beautiful beach has a protected lagoon and is perfect for small children. Go early in the morning before the winds pick up and then go for lunch and walk around Paia. Paia Town: A funky little hippy surf beach town with many unique shops and restaurants. Mana Foods is a great place to get local organic foods and healthy food to go. If you are going to have dinner at Mama’s Fish House, stop by Paia first. Plan on spending 1-2 hours here. Add more time if you will be eating and shopping. Kuau Cove: This is a beautiful little cove right in front of Mama’s Fish House. It’s great for photos or just chilling and hanging out. Hookipa Beach: After 11 a.m., check out world-class windsurfers flying around doing tricks. On the north end, by the cliff, you can watch giant sea turtles basking in the sun. It’s not a beach to really hang out at because it gets super windy and can have huge waves. Great spot to come to before or after visiting Paia Town or before going to Mama’s Fish House. Also, a great stop on the way back from spots further up on the Road To Hana since it can be a bit hard to turn left back onto the highway. Aloha’ Aina BBQ Food Truck: This has become a local favorite to grab lunch. Pe’ahi: Better known as the infamous Jaws Surf Break, it’s a must-see, but only when there’s a large winter swell. Please note a 4 wheel drive is needed to access the lookout point to Jaws. Jaws Country Store: A great little place to grab something to eat. There’s a nice grassy area for the kids to play and some picnic tables. Twin Falls: This is the first waterfall at the beginning of the Road to Hana. Many locals come here just for hiking and the waterfalls, even if they aren’t doing the Road To Hana. Please note you have to pay for parking. Zipline: Zipline through the jungles of Maui! The 8-Line Jungle Zipline Tour is a fun excursion on the North Shore. Make reservations here. The Road to Hana: This is a separate adventure requiring at least half a day to explore. |
