Whale-watching season in Maui begins in December and goes through May. February is the peak time to see whales around Maui. During peak season, all you have to do is keep your eyes on the ocean, and you will eventually see whales—no kidding! Look for Whales from the Shore Park at Ulua Beach or Polo Beach and walk the Wailea Beach Path for an early morning or sunset walk during peak season, and you will be sure to see whales right offshore. Kamaole Beach Park III is another excellent whale-watching spot and the perfect place to watch the sunset or have a picnic. If you’ve been in Lahaina, as you drive back, be sure to stop at the Papawai Scenic Outlook. Just before you get to Maalaea, and right after the Pali tunnel, you’ll find this overlook with spectacular ocean views. Bring a pair of binoculars for a closer look, and you will be surprised at how many whales you see! Amazing Close-Up Views on a Whale-Watching Tour To really get close enough to truly appreciate these incredible creatures, we strongly recommend a whale-watching tour. A family favorite is the Pacific Whale Foundation Eco Whale Watching Tour. Featuring a large, stable boat, it’s great for all ages and isn’t an all-day adventure like some other tours. Make reservations here. For the ultimate whale-watching adventure, Redline’s high-powered raft will take you where the big boats can’t go (like off the lava fields of Le Perouse Bay)! This boat is very fast—and you will get wet—but it’s a whole lot of fun! Not for small children or the elderly. Make reservations here. If you want to get really close-up and personal, you can’t get much closer to the whales than with a private Kayak Whale Watching Tour. Whales have been known to come right up to the kayakers to say hi. Make reservations here for this one-of-a-kind experience. See the Whales on Your Way to Molokini Crater If you have booked a Molokini Snorkeling Tour during December to May, you don’t need to go on a separate whale-watching tour. You will definitely see whales along the way to the snorkeling site. This is a great way to do both favorite activities at once! |
