Upcountry
Away from all the resorts and beaches, Upcountry refers to the towns on the mountainside of Haleakala. Beautiful and rural, Upcountry offers a different way to see Maui. Below are a few places you might want to check out.
Almost all are good for kids, but some of the tours may not have enough activity for the smaller ones. You won’t be able to do everything in one day, and many tours require reservations, so you will want to plan ahead. Click the underlined links for more information. The places are listed as you approach them coming from Kihei and up HI-37. Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum: In Pu’unene, right off the highway when heading Upcountry. Learn the history of the Sugar Industry. Small but informative. Open Monday-Thursday at 10 a.m. with the last admission at 1 p.m. $7 admission, kids 5 and under free. Makawao Sacred Garden: Beautiful, relaxing, and peaceful garden filled with spiritual gifts, statues, and more. Free admission. Makai Glass: Very cool art gallery where you can observe the artist in action and even participate in glass blowing. Free admission. Maui Pineapple Tour: Tour the famous Maui Gold Plantation, plus all guests receive a boxed, airport-ready pineapple! Make reservations here. If you go in the morning, stop by local favorite Komoda Bakery for their famous donuts on a stick, cream puffs, and other baked goodies. Upcountry Farmer’s Market: Maui’s largest and most popular farmers market. Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Come early because it gets crowded. Zipline: Zipline through the jungles of Maui! The 8-Line Jungle Zipline Tour is a fun excursion when you are going Upcountry. Make reservations here. Upper Kula Maui Bees: A great little farm stand to grab some local produce and goodies. Try the honey latte if you need a little recharge, or grab a jar of their artisanal raw Maui honey. They also offer guided “bee” tours on Fridays. Reservations are required for a tour. Kula Lodge Garden Terrace Restaurant: An amazing location with awesome views. This is a great place for brunch. Under new ownership, so check the website for hours.
