Sunrise at Haleakala National Park is described as heavenly and is considered a must-do when you come to Maui. But be aware, it’s about an hour and a half from Kihei so you’ll need to wake up early.
We’ve put together a list of everything you’ll need to know for this one-of-a-kind, truly amazing experience.
You’ll Need a Reservation to Enter the Park Haleakala is part of the National Park System. Because of the extreme popularity of seeing the sunrise at the summit, reservations are required to get into the park from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Reservations may only be made online, and they sell out so make sure to book ahead.
There is a nominal fee to make a reservation. Please also be aware that there is also a separate park entrance fee, which is waived if you hold an annual pass.
There is one parking lot for each of the viewing areas and they can fill up fast. You’ll be directed where to park and once a lot is full, it is closed. There may also be a line to enter the park, so be sure to give yourself some extra time.
The Weather Will Be Surprisingly Cold
Be prepared! It gets VERY COLD at the summit of Haleakala.
Bring warm clothes and blankets if you are going to watch the sunrise. Temperatures average in the low- to mid-40s and it may be windy and damp. Although it warms up in the day, it rarely gets above the mid-60s.
Sunset Is an Option
If you’re not a morning person, the sunsets at Haleakala are also amazing. If you stay past dark, you’ll be able to see more stars than you have ever imagined.
